Some really nice Spalted Walnut. Finished with some shellac and a couple coats of lacquer. I didn't want it to have a great sheen and make it look to plastic. The wood speaks for itself.

As a wine afficianado(aka wino) I like this piece.
You are one of the few turners I know who doesn't like plasticized finishes. A high sheen not only 'hides' the grain, but makes it difficult to photograph.

One more thing. Most walnut does not have much sapwood. Is the goblet real small?

The Goblet is about 6 inched tall. This is not from sap, this from some spalted Walnut. A friend gave me a bunch of Walnut that sat in a barn for ten years.

Some was good, some just rotted out like most walnut does... but there was some that spalted, kinda rare to see that in Walnut... but there it is.

grats on finding that nice piece of wood, you used the "faults" very nicely there! :)

Lets not, and say we did!

Thanks

Wait a minute, how do I know it's spalted? it looks more like the piece is a contrast between heartwood and the meat of the tree. Pretty, yes, and well photographed, but bulky. You're lucky it didn't split on you.

Goblet is actually Spalted Walnut. Vary rare, I know. This sat up in a barn drying out for over 10 years before it was given to me.

Wow, But still, spalting shouldn't bleach a wood's color, not that I've seen spalted walnut before, of course.
